The District Awards may be submitted for any volunteer who has demonstrated service to your unit above and beyond the norm. Anyone from the unit may submit these award nominations on anyone other than themselves. There is no limit as to how many of these awards may be submitted (one form per person per award please), but only one of each of these will be selected by the Awards Nominating Committee based upon the information provided. District Award of Merit
The District Award of Merit is a council award presented by districts in the same manner that the Silver Beaver is a national award presented by councils. The award is available to Scouters who render service of an outstanding nature at the district level. The award is made available annually on the basis of 1 for each 25 traditional units or fraction thereof. The district need not present all the awards to which it is entitled each year. It is not appropriate to nominate a Scouter who has already received this award. A professional Scouter or other council employee may not receive this award based on employment service. However, a professional Scouter or employee who also serves as a volunteer Scouter may be eligible, based on volunteer service.

Shield of Service Award
The "Shield of Service" award is presented by the District Commissioner’s Staff to adult Scouters from the various Scout Units in the Croatan Trails District in recognition of their continuing and significant contributions to the Unit’s program. The Award is given, upon recommendation of the Unit's Committee Chairman, to one member of the Unit. No criteria is imposed for this award by the Commissioner’s Staff. The McCain Award
The McCain Award is named after the first recipients of the awards Wayne and Lynn McCain. It is intended to recognize a “Scouting Couple” i.e. husband and wife team who have demonstrated continuing service to the Scouting program in Croatan Trails. There is no criterion for nomination for the award other than both must be a registered BSA member. Service can be at either the unit or district level, or a combination of both. While a specific time period is not defined recipients of this recognition would have normally served Scouting for five or more years.
